Grit Bins

Thursday 25th February

Following the recent announcement that each ward will be having 5 more grit bins that they can locate I have submitted 1 for Sherston Covert. If you have any requests please let me know. The Labour Party might complain about the lack of grit bins locally but when they were the ruling Group there were a lot less as they decided to scrap them which caused havoc down many local areas.

Council Tax increase 1.9%

Tuesday 23rd February

Another action packed debate at full council, you would never guess an election is on the way. The Conservative led Council has managed to keep council tax below the rate of inflation to a 1.9% increase. This is the 5th year in a row that we have been able to do this since we have been the ruling group on the council in 2004. This was in sharp contrast to Labour when they were the ruling Group which saw above inflation increases year after year.

Alcohol Restricted Zones

Monday 22nd February

A number of 'Alcohol Restricted Zone' signs have been put up around Brandwood Ward and more on Druids Heath following further local funding. This means that alcohol is not allowed to be drunk in public places even if signs are not up. The police can still enforce this. Following complaints from local residents I have requested some further signs in Beckfield Close and around Partons Road.

Bus shelter by Pear Tree Pub

Thursday 18th February

I have been contacted by some residents about the bus shelter outside the Pear Tree Pub, 25-27 Alcester Road South, Kings Heath. This just over the border of Brandwood Ward so it falls within Moseley and Kings Heath Ward.

Centro are looking at removing this but it needs to get the support of the 3 councillors. When all necessary letters are received the objection is considered by Centro's Bus Shelter Appeals Sub-Committee.

Special Collection

Wednesday 17th February

Unfortunately the weather doesn't consider when we are delivering leaflets so it was a wet delivery session. We are delivering a special collection around Pennyacre Road to tell people of a free collection of old bulky items that they no longer want. Then off to my surgery at St Bedes Church Hall where members of the public can ask for advice on issues that they are having with the local area. These are normally around housing, rubbish, graffiti etc.

Hit Squad

Friday 12th February

We are having the hit squad coming to Brandwood over the next few weeks. They are a cleaning team which aim to visually improve the area. This is a popular service with residents that take pride in the area. I have asked for a number of areas to be done at the request of residents, including the Monyhull Estate, Lindsworth Estate and Taylor Road area.

Ward Advisory Board

Monday 8th February

I have had various meetings around Birmingham. The main one was in the evening, the Ward Advisory Board. The main item on the agenda was the allocation of the £100,000community chest budget. This is always a difficult meeting as everyone has differing views on how it should be shared. We had over £200,000 in bids so as you can imagine not everyone got what they wanted. We approved bids for a number of projects including the special collections of bulky household waste, the Brandwood Centre and some domestic violence projects.

Monyhull Hall Road School proposals

Wednesday 3rd October

In recent days, a considerable amount of misinformation has appeared regarding a proposal to build a new school on the Lindsworth School site, off Monyhull Hall Road.

Local Councillors were first made aware of the possibility that a school could be built in Brandwood Ward just before Christmas, when they were invited to join a working party which was exploring the various options about how the building of the new school would be financed and where it would be situated.

In order to allay residents' concerns it must be stressed that no decision has yet been made about where to build the new school as there are a number of sites presently under consideration.

Therefore, residents should be assured that at this stage all proposals are just that, "proposals", and that the process about how to proceed is at an early stage.

If, and when, the possibility that a school will be built on the Lindsworth site becomes a firm proposal, residents can be assured that a comprehensive consultation will take place, as it is fully understood by all the parties involved in the process that residents' views must be taken into account, because they are the people who will be mostly affected by a decision to build a school near their homes.
